How a 3D Printed Jewel is Born
A 3D printed jewel takes shape directly from the three-dimensional design, layer by layer. This constructive freedom allows for the creation of hollow volumes, interweaves, and geometries that would be difficult to achieve with other processes.
From design to object
Each Siño Milano collection begins as a 3D model designed by Dario Covini. The piece is then 3D printed in nylon, finished, and finally hand-dyed by immersion in a color bath.
Technology and craftsmanship remain visible in the same object: in the precision of the structure and in the slight variations in tone between one dye bath and the next.
The material
We work with nylon, a technical material chosen for its lightness, flexibility, and geometric rendering. Its hollow structure allows us to create significant volumes while keeping the weight low. It is water-resistant, and the dyes used are tested for colorfastness to light, sweat, and rubbing.
Do nylon jewels contain nickel?
The nylon used for the 3D-printed parts is nickel-free. For the earrings, posts, ear wires, and backs are made of hypoallergenic surgical steel.
The dyes used comply with the European REACH regulation and are subjected by the supplier to laboratory tests on metal migration and color fastness.
Does the color come off?
During dyeing, the colour penetrates the material. Dye tests show good resistance to light, sweat, and rubbing. Each colour batch may result in slight tone variations: these are part of the manual process and make each piece slightly different.
Why are they so light?
For two reasons that add up. The first is the material, which is inherently lightweight. The second is the geometry: 3D printing allows for the creation of hollow volumes, so a piece can have a significant presence while remaining almost empty inside.
